The ASTM D4-86 (R2018) standard provides guidelines for determining the bitumen content in materials that contain at least 25% bitumen. The standard emphasizes the importance of using a representative sample for accurate results. If the sample contains more than 2% water, it must be dehydrated before the test.
The standard includes two procedures for determining bitumen content. Procedure No. 1, described in Section 7, is typically used for most bituminous materials and provides a quick and accurate result. However, if the material contains finely divided mineral matter that could clog the filter or if the mineral residue is not easily retained, Procedure No. 2 in Section 8 should be followed.
