The ASTM C596-18 standard is a test method that provides a specific set of conditions to determine the drying shrinkage of mortar containing hydraulic cement. The test requires subjecting a mortar specimen, with a defined composition, to a controlled environment of temperature, relative humidity, and evaporation rate for a specified time period. During this time, the change in length of the specimen is measured and referred to as "drying shrinkage."
The standard also establishes that the drying shrinkage of mortar determined in this test method has a linear relationship to the drying shrinkage of concrete made with the same cement and exposed to the same drying conditions. Hence, this test method can be used to gather data on the effect of a hydraulic cement on the drying shrinkage of concrete made with that cement.
