Standard ENStandard Specification for Bitumen-Saturated Woven Burlap Fabrics Used in Roofing and Waterproofing
Also Known As:
The ASTM D1327/D1327M-04 (R2020) standard is titled "Standard Specification for Bitumen-Saturated Woven Burlap Fabrics Used in Roofing and Waterproofing." It covers woven burlap fabrics that are saturated with either asphalt or refined coal-tar for use in the membrane system of roofing or waterproofing. The choice of saturant (asphalt or coal-tar) depends on the specific requirements specified by the purchaser or manufacturer.
For asphalt-saturated burlap fabric, it is intended to be used with asphalt base plying cement, such as mopping asphalts or appropriate solvent-bearing bituminous materials. On the other hand, coal-tar-saturated burlap fabric is designed for use with coal-tar base plying cements, such as coal-tar pitches or appropriate solvent-bearing bituminous materials.
The woven burlap fabric described in this standard is composed of 100% jute fiber, except for two cotton threads in each selvage. During the manufacturing process, the dry burlap fabric is saturated with bitumen. Various tests are conducted to determine properties such as mass per roll, width, breaking strength, pliability, thread count, and ash content of the woven burlap fabrics.
