Standard ENStandard Test Method for Permanent Deformation Behavior and Rutting Resistance of Compacted Asphalt Mix in the Modified Loaded Wheel Tracker Test Utilizing Controlled Confining Pressure
Also Known As:
ASTM D8292-20 is a standard test method that determines the permanent deformation behavior and rutting resistance of compacted asphalt mixtures. It can also measure the moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures if required. The test is performed using a modified loaded wheel tracker device that applies controlled confining pressure to the specimen.
The test specimen can be prepared either by using a laboratory roller compactor or by securing saw-cut slab specimens from the field. The dimensions of the test slabs are 305 mm by 305 mm, with a thickness of 50 mm, 75 mm, or 100 mm, depending on the nominal maximum aggregate size. The thickness of the specimen must be at least two and a half times the nominal maximum aggregate size.
It is important to note that the quality of the results obtained from this test method depends on the competence of the personnel conducting the test and the calibration and maintenance of the equipment used. Compliance with the relevant specifications is necessary but not sufficient to ensure reliable results. Factors such as testing, sampling, and inspection procedures also play a role in obtaining reliable results.
It is also important to mention that this standard does not provide a precision estimate, and therefore it should only be used for research and informational purposes. It is not recommended to use this standard for acceptance or rejection of materials for purchasing purposes.
