Standard ENStandard Practice for Determining Asphalt Volume Correction to a Base Temperature
Also Known As:
The ASTM D4311/D4311M-15 standard provides guidelines for converting asphalt volumes measured at different temperatures to a volume at a standard base temperature. This standard is applicable to all types of asphalts, except for emulsified asphalts.
The practice provides tables of volume correction factors that can be used to convert asphalt volumes measured at temperatures ranging from -25 to +275°C [-13 to +527°F] to a volume at a base temperature of 15°C [60°F]. These correction factors have been proven to be accurate for custody transfer and accounting operations.
The standard also includes coefficients of expansion in Table 1 and Table 2, which are used to develop the volume correction factors. Column A factors are used for asphalts with a density at 15°C of 966 kg/m³ or higher, while column B factors are used for asphalts with a density at 15°C of 850 to 965 kg/m³. Similarly, column A factors are used for asphalts with an API gravity at [60°F] of 14.9° or less and a specific gravity [60/60°F] of 0.967 or higher, while column B factors are used for asphalts with an API gravity at [60°F] from 15.0° to 34.9° or a specific gravity [60/60°F] from 0.850 to 0.966.
