Standard EN SampleStandard Test Method for High-Strain Dynamic Testing of Deep Foundations
Also Known As:
The ASTM D4945-17 standard provides guidelines for conducting dynamic tests on deep foundations. The test method involves applying an axial impact force to a deep foundation unit, such as a driven pile or cast-in-place pile, and measuring the subsequent force and velocity response.
The purpose of this standard is to evaluate the integrity of the pile, the performance of the impact system, and the maximum compressive and tensile stresses occurring in the pile. The force and velocity are typically derived from measured strain and acceleration values.
The standard emphasizes that the analysis of dynamic test results can be used to estimate the ultimate axial static compression capacity of the pile, but this estimation may be affected by various factors such as pile installation procedures, pile material properties, soil characteristics, and analysis methods. In cases where the Engineer does not have sufficient experience or data to confidently estimate the static capacity, a static load test according to Test Method D1143/D1143M or D3689 should be used to verify the estimates.
The standard also highlights that the quality of the test results depends on the competence of the personnel performing the test and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Compliance with Practice D3740, which provides criteria for competent and objective testing, is recommended but does not guarantee reliable results.
