Standard ENStandard Practice for Safe Walking Surfaces
Also Known As:
ASTM F1637-21 standard provides guidelines and criteria for the design, construction, and maintenance of walkways and surfaces in buildings and structures. It specifically addresses various elements such as floors, walkway surfaces, sidewalks, short flight stairs, gratings, wheel stops, and speed bumps. However, it does not cover swimming pools, bath tubs, showers, natural walks, and unimproved paths.
The purpose of this standard is to establish reasonably safe walking surfaces for pedestrians wearing normal footwear. It offers design and construction guidelines as well as minimum maintenance criteria. It should be noted that these guidelines may not be sufficient for individuals with certain mobility impairments. While compliance with this standard will not eliminate all hazards, it will help reduce certain pedestrian risks.
