The ASTM D1074-17 standard provides a method for measuring the compressive strength of compacted asphalt mixtures. This test method is applicable to both laboratory-prepared specimens and mixtures manufactured in a hot-mix plant. The compressive strength, along with density and voids properties, is used for laboratory mix design of asphalt mixtures.

The standard also describes the methods for molding, curing, and testing of specimens being evaluated by Test Method D1075. It emphasizes that the compressive strength should be considered in conjunction with other mixture physical properties to determine the overall mixture characterization, as well as its suitability for use as a highway paving material under specific loading conditions and environment.

The typical values of minimum compressive strengths for design of asphalt mixtures based on this test method are provided in Table 401-1 of the Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects. However, state departments of transportation and federal agencies may have their own specific requirements based on their experience with this test method.

Note 1 of the standard emphasizes the importance of competent personnel and proper equipment calibration and maintenance in producing quality results. While compliance with Specification D3666 is an indication of capable and objective testing, it alone does not guarantee reliable results. Following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or similar acceptable guidelines helps control some of the factors that can affect the reliability of the results obtained through this test method.
