Standard ENStandard Test Method for Shrinkage and Tenacity of Oil- and Resin-Base Caulking Compounds
Also Known As:
The ASTM D2453-15 (R2020)e1 standard is a laboratory procedure that specifies the method for determining the shrinkage and tenacity of oil- and resin-base caulking compounds. Shrinkage is a measurement of the nonvolatile solids in the compound, and excessive shrinkage can lead to cracking or shrinking from the sides of a joint when in service. Tenacity, on the other hand, measures the flexibility of the caulking compound. Compounds that cure excessively hard and lack flexibility may fail prematurely due to their inability to absorb movement.
This standard is applicable to both gun-grade (Type I) and knife-grade (Type II) caulking compounds. It should be noted that this test method is not suitable for water-based products. Additionally, the standard specifies that there are no known similar ISO standards for this specific testing procedure.
