Standard ENStandard Specification for Asphalt Shingles Made from Glass Felt and Surfaced with Mineral Granules
Also Known As:
The ASTM D3462/D3462M-19 standard establishes the requirements for asphalt roofing shingles. These shingles are composed of glass felt or felts that are impregnated and coated on both sides with asphalt. The weather side of the shingles is surfaced with mineral granules.
The standard specifies the physical requirements that the shingles must meet. These include behavior on melting, tear strength, wind resistance, fire resistance, softening point, and pliability. These physical properties are measured immediately after packaging or at a reasonable time after manufacture.
It is important to note that this specification only covers the evaluation of the shingles as manufactured. The standard does not address the physical and performance requirements of the shingles after application and during in-service use.
Additionally, the standard specifies that the shingles should be applied with a headlap of not less than 51 mm (2 inches). The shingles must also be supplied with a factory-applied self-sealing adhesive or be designed to be locked together during installation.
