Standard ENStandard Specification for Materials for Soil-Aggregate Subbase, Base, and Surface Courses
Also Known As:
ASTM D1241-15 is a standard specification that covers the quality and grading of materials used in the construction of subbase, base, and surface courses. These materials include sand-clay mixtures, gravel, stone or slag screenings, sand, crusher-run coarse aggregate, or any combination of these materials. The standard ensures that these materials have normal specific gravity, absorption, and gradation characteristics.
The specification classifies the materials into two types: Type I and Type II. Type I mixtures consist of stone, gravel, or slag with natural or crushed sand and fine mineral particles passing a No. 200 sieve, while Type II mixtures consist of natural or crushed sand with or without stone, gravel, or slag. Each type must conform to specific requirements for gradation.
To ensure quality, various tests are conducted on the aggregates, including abrasion loss, liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index. These tests help determine the suitability and performance of the materials in subbase, base, and surface courses.
