Standard ENStandard Terminology Relating to Pavement Distress
Also Known As:
ASTM E1778-98a (R2019) is a standard terminology that provides definitions for pavement distress in various types of paved surfaces, including airfields, highways, roads, streets, and parking lots. It specifically covers surfaces paved with either bituminous or portland cement concrete and does not include other types of paved or unpaved surfaces.
The standard includes definitions for most of the significant types of pavement surface distresses but it is not all-inclusive. It should be noted that not all distresses listed in the standard are applicable to all pavement categories.
One important aspect to consider is that this terminology does not address severity levels of pavement distress. Instead, severity levels are addressed in other ASTM test methods and practices, such as Test Method D5340. However, a knowledge of severity levels is necessary for evaluating many of the distresses defined in this standard.
