Standard ENStandard Practice for the Identification of Trinidad Lake Asphalt in Asphalt Mixes
Also Known As:
The ASTM D6608-20 standard provides guidelines for the qualitative determination of Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) in Trinidad Lake Modified Asphalt Cements. The practice involves conducting a copper strip test to assess the presence of TLA in the asphalt.
The standard highlights that asphalt typically contains sulfur compounds, which are mostly removed during the refining process. However, Trinidad Lake Modified Asphalt contains sulfur compounds that are released at lower temperatures, tarnishing a copper strip. This phenomenon is directly related to the total TLA content in the asphalt. By performing the copper strip test, the qualitative presence of TLA can be determined.
Note 1 emphasizes that the accuracy of the results obtained from this standard depends on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure, as well as the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Compliance with Specification D3666 is recommended but does not guarantee reliable results. The standard warns that mercury, which may be used in testing, is a hazardous material and should be handled with caution.
The practice is limited to asphalt binders produced in accordance with Specification D5710/D5710M. The standard also states that the text may include notes and footnotes, which provide explanatory information but are not considered requirements of the standard.
