ASTM C1904-20 Standard Test Methods for Determination of the Effects of Biogenic Acidification on Concrete Antimicrobial Additives and/or Concrete Products provides procedures for assessing the effects of biogenic acidification on concrete products and the efficacy of antimicrobial substances in resisting microbially-induced corrosion (MIC) of concrete. The standard consists of three test methods: Test Method A, Test Method B, and Test Method C.

Test Method A evaluates the effectiveness of antimicrobial admixtures in delaying or preventing biogenic acidification in a nutrient-rich simulated wastewater exposure solution. Test Method B assesses the efficacy of antimicrobial admixtures in a prescribed cementitious system or compares the performance of different cementitious systems in delaying or preventing corrosion in the Stage II of MIC. Test Method C evaluates the suitability of cementitious systems in delaying or preventing corrosion in the Stage III of MIC.

The tests are conducted using simulated exposure solutions containing controlled bacterial strains. These tests can be performed on the benchtop in a biosafety level 1 laboratory environment, eliminating the need for an environmental chamber. The pH range of the solution can be controlled to simulate different stages of MIC.

The results obtained from these test methods should be used in conjunction with Guide C1894 for the selection of biologically-resistant materials. However, it is important to note that these test methods do not encompass all factors that may affect the performance of materials under actual service conditions. Additionally, this standard does not cover controlled breeding chamber tests, chemical acid immersion tests, field exposure conditions, or specific design scenarios such as sewage pipe or concrete riser network design. The standard also excludes tests performed on concrete samples that have already been exposed to MIC conditions and concrete deterioration due to chemical sulfate attack.
