Standard ENStandard Guide for Abrasion Resistance of Mortar Surfaces Using a Rotary Platform Abraser
Also Known As:
The ASTM C1803-20 standard provides a method for quantifying the abrasion resistance of treated or untreated mortar surfaces. The guide is applicable to various factors that can cause wear on mortar surfaces, such as skidding, scraping, sliding of objects, foot and tire traffic. It can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of fluid applied hardeners, densifiers, sealers, and other surface treatments by comparing them with untreated control specimens.
The standard can also be used in conjunction with other test methods to assess the impact of surface treatments after abrasion. For example, it can be combined with Test Method D6532 to evaluate the effectiveness of clear water repellents on hydraulic cement mortar specimens based on water absorption.
This guide is useful for acceptance testing of mortar surfaces and for evaluating the effects of various processing variables on the abrasion resistance, such as substrate preparation, surface texture, treatment application variables, and curing regimen. The results obtained from the test can be correlated with in-place performance, used for comparative rating of alternative materials, or for comparing treated and untreated surfaces. However, it's important to note that the resistance of material surfaces to abrasion is only one of several factors contributing to wear performance in real-life applications.
The resistance of mortar to abrasion can be influenced by factors such as test conditions, type of abradant, pressure between the specimen and abradant, selection of mortar-making materials, and type, kind, or amount of treatment materials. Additionally, the variations in the abrasive wheel surface due to the adhesion of wear debris generated during the test can affect the consistency of the results. Therefore, it is recommended to clean and resurface the abrading wheels at defined intervals to ensure more consistent testing outcomes.
