Standard ENStandard Practice for Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
Also Known As:
ASTM C31/C31M-21a is a standard practice that provides standardized requirements for making, curing, protecting, and transporting concrete test specimens in the field. It specifies the procedures for making and curing cylinder and beam specimens from representative samples of fresh concrete for a construction project. The practice covers both standard cured specimens and field cured specimens.
The standard states that if the specimens are made and standard cured, the resulting strength test data can be used for acceptance testing, checking the adequacy of mixture proportions for strength, and quality control purposes. On the other hand, if the specimens are made and field cured, the resulting strength test data can be used to determine whether a structure is capable of being put in service, compare with test results from various in-place test methods, assess the adequacy of curing and protection of concrete in the structure, or determine the form or shoring removal time requirements.
The practice clarifies that it is not intended for making specimens from concrete that does not have measurable slump or requiring other sizes or shapes of specimens. It is also not applicable to lightweight insulating concrete or controlled low strength material (CLSM), which have their own separate test methods.
The standard also includes explanatory notes, which are not considered as requirements of the standard.
