Standard ENStandard Test Method for Aggregate Durability Index
Also Known As:
The ASTM D3744/D3744M-18 standard is a method used to determine the durability index of an aggregate. The durability index is a measure of the relative resistance of an aggregate to the production of clay-like fines when subjected to mechanical degradation.
The standard specifies a procedure that has been used in certain areas of the United States and has been correlated with aggregate performance in various construction applications, such as aggregate base, permeable material for backfill, fine concrete aggregate, and riprap for rock slope protection. It allows for a minimum durability index to be specified, which prohibits the use of an aggregate that is prone to degradation and the generation of clay-like fines.
This test method provides a rapid evaluation of the quality of a new aggregate source and can potentially replace the sodium sulfate soundness test for evaluating the durability of fine aggregate used in portland cement concrete. This helps to reduce the need for time-consuming and expensive soundness tests.
While the application of this method has been limited to specific construction uses, there is potential for expanding its application to control the quality of aggregates used in other areas of construction, such as bituminous paving mixtures, coarse aggregate for portland cement concrete, and railroad ballast.
It should be noted that the quality of the results produced by this test method is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Compliance with the specified criteria alone does not guarantee reliable results, as various factors can influence the accuracy of the testing.
