The ASTM E274/E274M-15 (R2020) standard provides guidelines for measuring the skid resistance of paved surfaces. The test method involves using a specific full-scale automotive tire to measure the steady-state friction force on a locked test wheel as it is dragged over a wetted pavement surface under constant load and speed. The tire's major plane should be parallel to its direction of motion and perpendicular to the pavement.

The measured values obtained using this method represent the frictional properties of the pavement under the specified conditions. These values are primarily intended for comparing the skid resistance of different pavements or evaluating changes in skid resistance over time. However, they are not sufficient to determine stopping distances on wet or dry pavements, nor are they suitable for determining the speed at which control of a vehicle would be lost. Additional measurements, such as peak and side force friction, are required for those determinations.

To conduct the test, the necessary equipment includes a vehicle with suitable test wheels (including tire and rim) and a braking system, a wheel load, force-measuring transducer, torque-measuring transducer, vehicle speed-measuring transducer, signal conditioning and recorder system, and a pavement wetting system. It is important to note that the results obtained using this test method may not directly correlate with those obtained by other pavement friction measuring methods.
