The ASTM D4612-16 standard is a test method for calculating the thermal diffusivity of rock and soil. The thermal diffusivity is a measure of how quickly heat will diffuse through a solid material. This parameter is important in solving transient heat conduction problems.
The test method requires the determination of the mass density, thermal conductivity, and specific heat at constant pressure of the material. These parameters must be determined under as near identical specimen conditions as possible. The thermal diffusivity determined by this test method can only be used to analyze heat transport in rock under the same thermal conditions as the parameters measurements.
