The ASTM D8188-18 standard provides guidance for measuring the relative density and density of semi-solid asphalt materials, asphalt binders, asphalt cements, and soft-tar pitches using a digital density meter with a U-tube.

The standard specifies that these density values are essential for converting volumes to mass units and correcting measured volumes at the measured temperature to a standard temperature. It also notes that the accuracy and reliability of the results depend on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used.

However, compliance with Specification D3666, which outlines criteria for competent and objective testing, sampling, and inspection, does not guarantee reliable results. The standard emphasizes that many factors contribute to reliable results and suggests following Specification D3666 or a similar acceptable guideline as a means of evaluating and controlling these factors.

Note 1 of the standard highlights that alternate methods for determining the density of semi-solid and solid asphalt materials and asphalt binders include Test Methods D3289, D3142/D3142M, and D70.

The standard also provides a few important clarifications. Firstly, it states that as of June 2021, the between-laboratory reproducibility of this test method is still being determined and is not available for acceptance or rejection of a material for purchasing purposes. Secondly, it specifies that the test method should not be used for petroleum distillates other than asphalt and asphalt binders. For other petroleum distillates and viscous oils, Test Method D4052 or D5002, or ISO 12185 should be used. Lastly, the footnotes provided in the standard are not considered requirements of the standard, except for those in tables and figures.
