The ASTM D1856-21 standard provides guidelines for the recovery of asphalt from a solution obtained through extraction. The purpose of this test method is to ensure that the recovered asphalt maintains its properties and quantity for further testing.
According to the standard, the asphalt should be extracted from the aggregate-asphalt mixture using Method A of Test Methods D2172/D2172M (centrifuge method) or D8159. It is noted that there is experimental evidence suggesting that the recovered asphalt might have slightly lower penetration values when recovered from solutions obtained through hot extraction methods.
