Standard ENStandard Test Method for Electrical Indication of Concrete’s Ability to Resist Chloride Ion Penetration
Also Known As:
ASTM C1202-19 is a standard test method that evaluates the electrical conductance of concrete samples to determine their resistance to the penetration of chloride ions. This test method provides a rapid indication of the concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration and has shown good correlation with chloride ponding tests in previous studies. It is primarily used for evaluating materials and material proportions for design purposes and research and development.
The age of the concrete sample has a significant impact on the test results, with most concretes becoming less permeable to chloride ions over time if properly cured. The standard was originally developed for evaluating alternative materials but has also been adopted for quality control and acceptance testing. Factors such as the ingredients used in the concrete mixtures and the curing procedures need to be considered, and the curing procedures and age at the time of testing must be clearly specified for accurate results.
The standard includes a qualitative relationship between test results and the chloride ion penetrability of concrete, provided in Table X1.1 in Appendix X1. However, caution should be exercised when interpreting results for surface-treated concretes, as the test may indicate low resistance to chloride ion penetration even if 90-day chloride ponding tests show higher resistance.
The standard describes the test method for 100-mm nominal diameter specimens, but it allows for testing of other specimen diameters with appropriate changes in the applied voltage cell design. Adjustments to the test results must be made for specimens with diameters other than 95 mm, and special care must be taken for specimens with diameters less than 95 mm to ensure complete contact with the conductive solutions during the test.
Note: The standard references additional notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material but are not considered requirements of the standard.
