Standard ENStandard Test Method for Permeability of Granular Soils (Constant Head)
Also Known As:
The ASTM D2434-19 standard is a test method for determining the permeability of granular soils using a constant-head method. The purpose of this test is to establish representative values of the coefficient of permeability, which is an important parameter for granular soils used in embankments or as base courses under pavements.
The standard provides detailed information on the apparatus required for conducting the test, as well as the methods for preparing the test specimen. It is important to note that the procedure is designed to minimize the consolidation influences during testing, and is therefore limited to disturbed granular soils containing not more than 10% soil passing the 75-µm (No. 200) sieve.
The testing procedure involves determining the laminar flow of water through the granular soil, and the coefficient of permeability is calculated based on the measured flow rate. The standard provides step-by-step instructions for conducting the test and calculating the permeability coefficient.
