Standard ENStandard Test Method for Conducting Time-to-Failure (Creep-Rupture) Tests of Joints Fabricated from Nonbituminous Organic Roof Membrane Material
Also Known As:
ASTM D5405/D5405M-98 (R2015) is a standard test method for conducting time-to-failure (creep-rupture) tests of joints fabricated from nonbituminous organic roof membrane material. The purpose of this test method is to evaluate the ability of joints to remain bonded over the expected service life of the roof membrane.
The test involves subjecting the joints to a constant tensile load under controlled environmental conditions. Both T-peel and lap-shear joints can be tested, and the joints can be made from either unreinforced or fabric-reinforced membrane material.
The materials used for the joints include vulcanized rubbers, nonvulcanized polymeric sheets, and thermoplastics. The bonding methods can involve the use of liquid-based adhesives, preformed tapes, and thermal and solvent weld processes.
The time-to-failure data obtained from the tests can be used to measure the load-carrying ability of the joints as a function of time, temperature, and relative humidity. It can also be used to characterize the joint with regard to factors affecting performance, such as surface preparation, adhesive thickness, environmental conditions during adhesive application and cure, and temperature of thermal welding processes.
It should be noted that while the results of this laboratory test can provide an indication of seam performance in service, there is no direct correlation established between the laboratory test and real-world performance.
