AWWA Standard for the Selection of Asbestos-Cement Transmission Pipe, Sizes 18 In. Through 42 In. (450 mm Through 1,050 mm), for Water Supply Service

SKU193443224 Published by American Water Works Association AWWA Publication Date2005 Pages CountPages96

The AWWA C403-05 standard provides guidelines for the selection of asbestos-cement transmission pipe for water supply service. The purpose of this standard is to assist design engineers in determining the appropriate pressure classification of the pipe based on various combinations of internal pressure and external load. This includes static, operating, and surge pressures as well as earth and superimposed live loads.

To expedite the selection process, the standard includes combined loading curves that illustrate the relationship between hydrostatic loading and external loading capabilities. Additionally, criteria are provided for determining the type of pipe to be used based on different soil and water conditions.

The standard also offers information on selecting the most economical pipe size in its appendices. This includes a friction loss of head chart based on the Hazen and Williams formula in Appendix A, a detailed analysis of surge pressure factors in Appendix B, and tables for determining yearly power costs in Appendix C.

Some key updates have been made to the standard, including the relocation of information on determining the type of pipe to be used based on soil and water conditions to Section 4.8 of the body of the standard. The Scope of the standard in Section 1.1 has been revised to reflect this change. Additionally, Class C bedding with shaped bottom and Class D bedding have been removed, leaving only the recommended bedding conditions.
