Standard EN SampleTunnelling Machinery: Safety Requirements
Also Known As:
BS EN 16191:2014 is a European standard that applies to machinery used in the construction of tunnels, shafts, and other underground excavations. The standard's scope includes identifying and addressing all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events related to the use of such machinery under intended conditions and reasonably foreseeable misuse.
This standard specifically covers the monitoring of hazardous atmospheres within tunnelling machinery, but it does not consider hand-arm and whole-body vibration as significant hazards for this machinery. It also excludes certain specific applications and items, including machinery used under hyperbaric conditions, in potentially explosive atmospheres (except for guidance provided by EN 1710:2005+A1:2008), ancillary tools and equipment not integral to the machinery, services supplied to the machinery (such as power supply and water), and loading and transport equipment not integral to the machinery (e.g., man riders and grout cars).
BS EN 16191:2014 does not apply to road headers, continuous miners, and impact rippers. Additionally, it does not apply to tunnelling machinery manufactured before the publication date of this standard by CEN.
