Standard EN SampleBituminous Mixtures - Test Methods - Determination of Bulk Density of Bituminous Specimens
Also Known As:
The BS EN 12697-6:2020 standard specifies test methods for determining the bulk density of compacted bituminous specimens. These test methods can be applied to specimens in the laboratory or to specimens taken from pavements after placement and compaction, either through coring or sawing.
The standard outlines four procedures for determining bulk density, with the choice of procedure depending on the estimated content and accessibility of voids in the specimen.
The first procedure is for determining bulk density when the specimen has a very closed surface and is in a dry state. The second procedure is used for specimens with a closed surface and is conducted with the specimen at a saturated surface dry (SSD) state. The third procedure is for specimens with an open or coarse surface and involves testing with a sealed specimen. The fourth procedure is used for specimens with a regular surface and geometric shapes, such as squares, rectangles, or cylinders, and determines bulk density by dimensions.
The standard also includes Annex A, which provides informative guidance on selecting the appropriate procedure based on specific conditions.
