Eurocode 8: Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance - Bridges
Also Known As:
BS EN 1998-2:2005+A2:2011, also known as Eurocode 8: Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance - Bridges, is a standard that primarily focuses on the seismic design of bridges. It specifically addresses bridges that have vertical or nearly vertical pier systems supporting the traffic deck superstructure, where the horizontal seismic actions are mainly resisted through bending of the piers or at the abutments. However, it can also be used for the seismic design of cable-stayed and arched bridges, although it may not fully cover these cases.
The standard covers various aspects related to seismic design of bridges. It includes provisions for basic requirements and compliance criteria, seismic action, analysis, strength verification, and detailing. These provisions are intended to ensure that bridges can withstand the dynamic forces generated by earthquakes and remain structurally stable.
BS EN 1998-2:2005+A2:2011 is an updated version of the previous standard DD ENV 1998-2:1996. This newer version includes additional amendments and updates to ensure that the seismic design criteria for bridges are up to date and in line with current practices and knowledge.
