The standard provides guidelines for conducting the test, including the equipment and apparatus required, such as a measuring vessel, balance, and measuring rod. The procedure involves measuring the mass of the empty vessel, adding a known volume of fresh mortar into the vessel, and then measuring the mass of the vessel with the mortar. By subtracting the mass of the empty vessel from the mass of the vessel with the mortar, the mass of the mortar can be determined.
In addition to measuring the mass, the standard also requires determining the volume of the mortar. This can be done by using a calibrated rod to measure the height of the mortar in the vessel.
