The BS 594987:2015+A1:2017 standard sets out requirements for the transport, laying, and compaction of asphalt mixtures that conform to specific European standards.

The standard is intended for a wide range of stakeholders, including asphalt product manufacturers, public sector highway authorities, private infrastructure owners, asset managers, consultant engineers, architects, test houses, test equipment manufacturers and suppliers, research laboratories, and highway and civil engineering contractors, as well as the Defense Infrastructure Organization.

The standard is important because it provides up-to-date technical information and guidelines on how to handle asphalt from the time it leaves the plant to when it is placed on the road. It also covers the necessary preliminary work to prepare the substrate for receiving the asphalt.

Since the last update, there have been several changes to the standard. These include additional notes, technical changes, and minor adjustments to various sub-clauses and tables. Changes were made to the nominal thickness note, the wheel tracking sub-clause, the air void content formula, the approximate rate of spread, the binder proportions, and the compacted aggregate density formula. These changes aim to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the standard's specifications and testing protocols.
