The standard applies to specimens obtained from road cores, laboratory-made slabs, or laboratory specimens prepared using a compaction device, provided that the specimen thickness is at least twice the nominal maximum particle size of the aggregate.

According to the standard, the nominal diameter of the specimens should be either 100 mm or 150 mm. However, if the nominal maximum particle size of the aggregate exceeds 22 mm, then the nominal diameter of the specimens should be 150 mm.
