BS 8004:2015+A1:2020 is a standard that provides guidelines for the design, construction, testing, monitoring, and maintenance of foundations. It is applicable to both shallow and deep foundations for various types of projects, ranging from low-rise buildings to large structures. The standard is intended for use by geotechnical and structural engineers, civil engineers, architects, specialists in piling design, specifiers, consultants, contractors, and clients.
The standard is important as it ensures that the design and construction of foundations adhere to the latest European and International standards, specifically BS EN 1997. It covers different types of foundations such as spread foundations, pile foundations (including helical pile foundations), and underpinning.
Using BS 8004:2015+A1:2020 provides several benefits, including conforming to the latest standards, improvements to Eurocode 7's recommendations for spread foundations, allowing for more economical design of piles, and providing detailed requirements for close-out reports.
An important update to the standard is the inclusion of an amendment in 2020, which modifies certain equations and symbols, provides guidance on the calculation of unit shaft friction in rocks, and includes information on micropiles.
