Standard EN SampleBituminous Mixtures: Test Methods - Binder Content by Ignition
Also Known As:
The BS EN 12697-39:2020 standard describes a test method for determining the binder content of bituminous mixtures through ignition. This method is an alternative to solvent extraction and can be used to evaluate the composition of the mixture. The remaining aggregate after ignition can be used to determine aggregate gradation and density, as long as excessive breakdown of the particles does not occur at the temperature reached.
The results obtained from this test can be used for process control or to ensure compliance of the mixtures. However, it should be noted that the method requires calibration of the mixture before analysis can be carried out. This calibration can be done either on the complete mixture or on each component material separately. Therefore, this method is more suitable for regularly used mixtures rather than a wide range of different mixtures from various aggregate sources.
This test method is applicable to both unmodified and modified binders, but calibration on each specific mixture is required when analyzing mixtures with modified binders. In cases of doubt or dispute, the reference method for determining the calibration value is based on laboratory-prepared bituminous mixtures, as detailed in Appendix A.1 and A.2 of the standard.
