SKU148465476 Published by Canadian Standards Association CSA Publication Date2014-08-01 Pages CountPages175

The CSA S304-14 (R2019) standard is the third edition of the standard and supersedes previous editions published in 2004 and 1994. The standard is based on limit states design principles and provides requirements for the structural design of unreinforced, reinforced, and prefabricated masonry structures and components, as well as prestressed masonry beams, walls, and columns.

Major changes in this edition include new and revised seismic provisions, with a separate clause dedicated to seismic design. Additional new content includes clauses on anchor bolt design and arch design. Empirical design requirements in Annex F have been revised, and significant changes have been made to the design of dimension cut stone and manufactured stone veneer in Annex A.

Other important changes include revised reinforcement provisions for shear walls, new strut stiffness provisions for analysis of buildings with infill shear walls, revised shear capacity of beams using compression field theory, revised requirements for reinforcing at intersections between walls, revised requirements for intermediate longitudinal reinforcement in beams, and a revised limit on maximum bar size.

The standard advises that review of the structural work and inspection and test results should be carried out during construction to ensure conformance with the design. It also refers to other masonry standards for requirements related to mortar and grout, masonry connectors, and masonry construction.

The standard does not apply to the structural design of vehicular bridges, but does apply to the structural design of partitions subject to unusual loads. It does not apply to the structural design of thin veneers secured by mortar adhesion or rough stone masonry, except as covered in Annex F, which provides prescriptive requirements for these cases.
