Welded Steel Construction
Also Known As:
CSA W59-18 is the tenth edition of the standard for welded steel construction. It provides welding requirements for carbon and low-alloy welded steel structures, excluding those covered by special codes or intended for pressure vessels. The standard covers a wide range of welding processes including shielded metal arc welding, submerged arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, metal-cored arc welding, electroslag welding, electrogas welding, and stud welding.
The standard is organized into several clauses, covering general requirements, roles and responsibilities for welding inspection, terminology, equipment, flaw length sizing, prequalified joint types, and more. The tenth edition includes significant revisions such as adding new steels to the prequalified list, clarifying requirements related to hydrogen designators, and rearranging the format of figures in Clause 10.
CSA W59-18 also includes non-mandatory annexes to provide better understanding of certain aspects of welded steel construction. The annexes in this edition have been reviewed for clarity, and new annexes have been added to provide additional requirements for welding consumables, fabrication techniques, weld repairs, demand critical welds, and welding inspection for seismic-force resisting systems, as well as to define an alternative ultrasonic examination technique.
