The DIN EN 12697-46 standard provides a set of test methods for evaluating the low temperature cracking resistance and properties of bituminous mixtures. These tests are conducted through uniaxial tension tests, which measure the behavior of the asphalt under specific conditions.
The standard outlines several parameters that can be determined through these tests. Firstly, the tensile strength at a specified temperature can be assessed using the uniaxial tension stress test (UTST). This helps to evaluate the resistance of the asphalt mixture against cracking.
Another parameter that can be determined is the minimum temperature at which the asphalt can resist failure. This is done through the thermal stress restrained specimen test (TSRST), which measures the ability of the asphalt to withstand low temperatures.
The standard also provides a method for evaluating the tensile strength reserve at a specified temperature, by combining the TSRST and UTST results. This gives an indication of the ability of the asphalt to resist cracking under specific conditions.
Additionally, the standard includes a relaxation test (RT) to determine the relaxation time of the asphalt, and tensile creep tests (TCT) to back calculate rheological parameters using the creep curve. These tests help to further characterize the behavior of the asphalt mixture.
Finally, the standard covers the assessment of fatigue resistance at low temperatures, which is achieved through uniaxial cyclic tension stress tests (UCTST). This evaluates the performance of the asphalt under combined cryogenic and mechanical loads.
