Railway Applications - Track - Noise Barriers and Related Devices Acting on Airborne Sound Propagation - Test Method for Determining the Acoustic Performance - Part 4: Intrinsic Characteristics - In Situ Values of Sound Diffraction Under Direct Sound Field
Also Known As:
This standard, DIN EN 16272-4, specifies a test method for determining the intrinsic characteristics of sound diffraction of added devices installed on the top of railway noise barriers. The purpose of this test method is to measure the acoustic performance of these added devices in terms of their ability to reduce airborne sound propagation. The test method involves measuring the sound pressure level at various reference points near the top edge of a noise barrier, both with and without the added device installed. The intrinsic effectiveness of the added device is then calculated by comparing the measured values with and without the device, while correcting for any change in height.
The test method outlined in this standard is applicable to a range of scenarios, including the preliminary qualification of added devices for installation on noise barriers, the determination of sound diffraction index difference in actual use, comparison of design specifications with actual performance data, verification of long-term performance, and the interactive design process of new products. The results of the test method are expressed as a function of frequency in one-third octave bands between 100 Hz and 5 kHz. If valid measurement results cannot be obtained for the entire frequency range, the results are reported for the restricted frequency range, along with a clear explanation for the restriction(s). A single-number rating is also calculated based on the frequency data.
It is important to note that this test method can be applied both in situ, on existing noise barriers, and on samples specifically built to be tested using this method. For indoor measurements, the standard provides an additional annex (Annex A), which outlines additional considerations for conducting tests in indoor environments.
