Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures - Part 4-2: Tanks
Also Known As:
Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures - Part 4-2: Tanks is a standard that provides guidelines for the structural design of above ground steel tanks that are used for storing liquid products. The standard applies to tanks with capacity greater than 100 m3 and tanks that have significant fabrication or assembly on site. It covers various types of tanks including cylindrical, conical, and pedestal tanks.
The standard specifies that the tanks should have characteristic internal pressures above the liquid surface limited to a range between -0.1 bar and 0.5 bar. Design temperatures of the tanks are also limited to specific ranges depending on the type of steel used in construction. Additional requirements for foundations, settlement, fabrication, erection, and testing are not covered in this standard, but are addressed in other specific standards such as EN 14015 for ambient temperature tanks and EN 14620 for cryogenic tanks.
Seismic design provisions for tanks are provided in EN 1998-4, while the design of supporting structures for tanks and aluminium roof structures on steel tanks are covered in EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1999-1-5, respectively. Foundations in reinforced concrete for steel tanks are addressed in EN 1992 and EN 1997. The specific actions on steel tanks to be considered in the design are given in EN 1991-4. However, this standard does not cover tanks of rectangular planform, tanks with capacity below 100 m3, tanks exposed to fire, tanks with dished ends and diameter less than 5 m, and cylindrical tanks with an aspect ratio of height to diameter greater than 3.
