The DIN EN 12697-25 standard outlines three different test methods (A1, A2, and B) for assessing the resistance of bituminous mixtures to permanent deformation. These tests involve subjecting cylindrical test specimens to cyclic compression with some level of confinement.

Tests A1 and A2 are used to determine the creep characteristics of bituminous mixtures through uniaxial cyclic compression. Method A1 is suitable for asphalt mixtures other than mastic asphalt, while Method A2 is preferred for mastic asphalt. The diameter of the loading platen in these methods is smaller than that of the test specimen to achieve a level of confinement. Block-pulse loading is used in A1, while A2 applies haversine loading with rest time.

Test method B, on the other hand, involves the triaxial cyclic compression test to determine the creep characteristics of bituminous mixtures. This method subjects the cylindrical test specimen to a defined confining stress and cyclic axial stress. It is commonly used for evaluating and developing new mixtures.

The standard applies to test specimens prepared either in the laboratory or cored from the road, with a maximum aggregate size of 32 mm. It is important to note that confinement of the test specimen is necessary to replicate realistic rutting behavior, particularly for mixtures with a large stone fraction.
