The DIN EN 1317-5 standard specifies the requirements for evaluating the conformity of various vehicle restraint systems. These systems include safety barriers, crash cushions, terminals (once ENV 1317-4 becomes an EN), transitions (once ENV 1317-4 becomes an EN), and vehicle/pedestrian parapets (only for the vehicle restraint function). It is important to note that pedestrian parapet requirements are not covered in this document.

The standard also includes requirements for evaluating the durability of these systems with respect to weathering. However, requirements for other forms of durability, such as marine environment and sand abrasion, are not included. Temporary barriers are also not within the scope of this document.

Additionally, Amendment 2 of the standard introduces a normative Annex that provides a classification of safety barriers for their resistance to snow removal. This classification considers factors such as the horizontal and vertical pressure of ploughed snow against the rail and minor impacts caused by the plough in the front and upper edge of the rail. The annex includes a simplified evaluation method specifically intended for normal steel beam barriers, rope fences, and monolithic concrete barriers, with the possibility of conducting tests for other barrier types. However, it should be noted that this annex should not be used for crash cushions, terminals, and transitions.
