Railway Applications: Electrical lighting for Rolling Stock in Public Transport Systems - Part 1: Heavy Rail

The DIN EN 13272-1 standard sets out the performance requirements and recommendations for electrical lighting systems in the interiors of public transport heavy rail units. It covers all operating and emergency conditions and applies only to new units. Retro-fitting of existing units with lighting systems outlined in this standard requires agreement between contractors.
The standard also defines the requirements for testing and conformity assessment of these lighting systems. However, it does not specify requirements for lighting installed in instruments or controls within the rolling stock. The standard also does not address the lighting requirements for boarding aids such as moving entrance stairs or lifts. It also excludes lighting installed for indication or decorative purposes, including flashing lights and decorative lighting.
It is worth noting that the specific requirements for interior lighting in urban rail units can be found in EN 13272-2, while the requirements for cab instrument lighting in heavy rail units can be found in EN 16186-2.
