The DIN EN 12697-8 standard outlines a procedure for determining the void characteristics of compacted bituminous specimens. This involves calculating the air voids content (Va), the voids content in the mineral aggregate filled with binder (VFB), and the voids content in the mineral aggregate filled with binder and additives (VFBad) for mixtures containing additives. The method can be applied to laboratory compacted specimens, as well as specimens obtained from pavement after placement and compacting, or from laboratory compacted slabs using coring or sawing techniques. These determined volumetric characteristics can then be used as mix design criteria or as parameters for assessing the performance of the mixture in road applications.
