Eurocode 7: Geotechnical design - Part 1: General rules
Also Known As:
EN 1997-1, also known as Eurocode 7, is a standard that serves as a general framework for the geotechnical design of buildings and civil engineering structures. The standard is divided into several sections that cover different aspects of geotechnical design.
Section 1 provides general information about the standard, while Section 2 establishes the basis for geotechnical design. Section 3 focuses on obtaining geotechnical data, which is crucial for accurate design calculations. Section 4 addresses the supervision of construction, monitoring, and maintenance of geotechnical structures.
Sections 5 to 12 provide specific guidelines for different types of geotechnical elements. These include fill, dewatering, ground improvement, and reinforcement techniques in Section 5, spread foundations in Section 6, pile foundations in Section 7, anchorages in Section 8, retaining structures in Section 9, hydraulic failure in Section 10, overall stability in Section 11, and embankments in Section 12.
EN 1997-1 is accompanied by Annexes A to J, which offer additional information and guidance. Annex A presents recommended partial safety factor values, although national variations may be allowed in the National annex. Annexes B to J provide supplementary informative guidance, including internationally applied calculation methods.
