The ICAO 9981:2020 standard serves as a complementary document to the SARPs (Standards and Recommended Practices) outlined in Annex 14, Volume I of ICAO. It provides detailed operational procedures that aerodrome operators should follow to ensure safe aerodrome operations.
The PANS-Aerodromes expand on the SARPs by specifying procedures to be implemented by both aerodrome regulators and operators. These procedures cover various aspects, including the initial certification of aerodromes and ongoing safety oversight measures. Additionally, the PANS-Aerodromes address the conduct of aerodrome compatibility studies, especially in cases where full compliance with the SARPs in Annex 14, Volume I is not possible to achieve.
By providing clearer guidelines and procedures, the ICAO 9981:2020 standard aims to enhance aerodrome operational safety and ensure the smooth functioning of aerodromes worldwide.
