Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-78: Particular requirements for outdoor barbecues
Also Known As:
IEC 60335-2-78:2021 is a standard that focuses on the safety requirements for outdoor barbecues used in households and similar environments. The standard applies to barbecues with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V. It also includes appliances used in shops, restaurants, hotels, light industry, and farms that can pose a danger to the public.
The standard addresses common hazards associated with such appliances to ensure the safety of users. However, it does not take into account the capabilities and limitations of individuals, such as children, who may require supervision or instruction to use the appliance safely. It also highlights that additional requirements may be necessary for appliances used on board ships, as well as any specifications from national health authorities, labor protection authorities, and similar bodies.
IEC 60335-2-78 does not cover barbecues for indoor use, appliances intended to burn charcoal or similar fuels, appliances for exclusive industrial purposes, appliances meant for use in hazardous environments, or battery-operated appliances.
The latest edition of the standard, published in 2021, includes technical revisions aligned with IEC 60335-1:2020. It also introduces requirements for communal use barbecues and clarifies the need for residual current devices (RCD) in certain situations. This edition cancels and replaces the previous editions and amendments published in 2002, 2008, and 2019. The standard is intended to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments, unless specified otherwise.
