Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-97: Particular Requirements for Drives for Shutters, Awnings, Blinds and Similar Equipment
Also Known As:
The IEC 60335-2-97:2016+A1:2019 standard focuses on the safety requirements for electric drives used in shutters, awnings, blinds, and similar equipment for household and similar purposes. It applies to drives with a rated voltage of up to 250 V for single-phase drives and 480 V for other drives. The standard also covers battery-operated and DC-supplied drives. Examples of equipment that falls within the scope of this standard include folding arm awnings, curtains, grilles, projection screens, shutters, and draperies.
The standard also considers drives that are not intended for normal household use but may pose a danger to the public, such as those used in shops, light industry, farms, and industrial premises. However, additional requirements may apply to drives used in vehicles, ships, or aircraft.
There are certain exclusions from the standard, such as drives used in locations with corrosive or explosive atmospheres, drives for vertically moving garage doors for residential use, drives for rolling doors, and drives used in hangars or heavy industries.
The standard aims to address common hazards associated with household appliances but does not account for individuals with physical, sensory, or mental limitations or for children playing with the appliance.
The third edition of the standard, published in 2016 and amended in 2019, brings several changes and improvements. These include expanding the scope to cover appliance types other than shutters, awnings, and blinds, introducing new tests for safe positioning, abnormal operation, and different types of movements, incorporating software requirements for programmable electronic circuits, and adding examples of swing shutters and sliding shutters.
It is recommended that national committees adopt the content of this standard for implementation within 12 to 36 months from the date of publication. The standard should be read in conjunction with IEC 60335-1:2010.
