Standard EN SampleBamboo Structures - Bamboo Culms - Structural Design
Also Known As:
ISO 22156:2021 is a standard that focuses on the structural design of bamboo structures made from round bamboo or shear panel systems. It is applicable to one- and two-storey residential, small commercial or institutional, and light industrial buildings that do not exceed a height of 7 m.
The standard primarily addresses the mechanical resistance, serviceability, and durability requirements of bamboo structures. It allows for the use of allowable load-bearing capacity design (ACD) and/or allowable stress design (ASD) approaches, which can be used together in the same structure. Additionally, the standard recognizes design approaches based on partial safety factor design (PSFD) and/or load and resistance factor design (LRFD) methods, established experience, or design by testing.
The standard does not cover requirements for thermal or sound insulation, as well as other additional requirements that may be necessary for bamboo structures. However, it does address the execution and quality of construction materials in relation to meeting the design requirements.
ISO 22156:2021 provides modification factors (C?) that are universally applicable to bamboo materials used in building construction. These factors are determined based on engineering judgment and aim to address the various parameters affecting bamboo material performance. Annex A of the standard provides a summary of the basis for the provisions contained in the document.
It is important to note that the standard does not apply to structures made of engineered bamboo products, such as glue-laminated bamboo or cross-laminated bamboo, bamboo-reinforced materials where bamboo is not the primary load-bearing constituent, or scaffold structures made with bamboo.
