ISO 29581-2:2010 is a standard that provides a performance-based method for chemical analysis of cement using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The standard focuses on the analysis of various elements including SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, SO3, K2O, Na2O, TiO2, P2O5, Mn2O3, SrO, Cl, and Br. The method can be extended to other relevant elements if suitable calibrations are developed.

The standard introduces an alternative method for analyzing cement for conformity and information purposes. This method uses fused samples and is validated using certified reference materials. It also sets performance criteria for the analysis. Alternatively, a method utilizing pressed pellets of unfused samples can be considered equivalent if it meets the same performance criteria.

The use of fused beads in the analysis improves accuracy for non-volatile elements by eliminating variations arising from mineralogical forms or oxidation states. Pressed pellets are better for volatile elements and can provide adequate accuracy for routine analysis of non-volatile elements.

However, analysis using fused beads has limitations when analyzing samples containing sulfide. Sulfate (SO3) cannot be directly determined, and sulfide content cannot be accurately determined due to the contribution of sulfate and possible sulfide volatilization during fusion. ISO 29581-1, included as Annex D of ISO 29581-2:2010, is the reference method for determining sulfate content in samples with sulfide species.

The standard also mentions that other methods can be used as long as they are calibrated against the reference method or internationally accepted reference materials to demonstrate equivalence. In case of disputes, unless all parties agree, only the reference method in ISO 29581-1 is to be used.

ISO 29581-2:2010 primarily applies to cements but can also be used for constituent materials and other materials for which the corresponding standards refer to these methods.
