Geotechnical Investigation and Testing - Identification, Description and Classification of Rock
Also Known As:
ISO 14689:2017 is a standard that provides rules for the identification, description, and classification of rock material and mass. It focuses on various aspects such as mineralogical composition, genetic aspects, structure, grain size, discontinuities, and other parameters. This standard is applicable to the geotechnical investigation and engineering geology in civil engineering, where the description is carried out on rock cores, samples, and exposures of rock masses.
It is important to note that this standard does not cover rock mass classification systems that suggest the behavior of rock masses based on descriptive parameters. Additionally, the identification and classification of soil for engineering purposes are covered in other ISO standards (ISO 14688-1 and ISO 14688-2). For materials that are intermediate between soil and rock, the procedures in ISO 14688-1, ISO 14688-2, and ISO 14689:2017 should be used as appropriate.
