Standard EN SampleStructural Health Monitoring Considerations and Guidance Specific to Rotorcraft
Also Known As: SAE AIR6892
SAE AIR 6892:2020 is an Aerospace Information Report that provides guidance on the application of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies specifically for rotorcraft. The purpose of this document is to offer recommendations on the definition, development, integration, qualification/certification, and deployment of SHM in commercial and military rotorcraft. The adoption of SHM in rotorcraft is expected to bring various benefits, including improved operational safety and reduced maintenance workload. This report builds upon the existing ARP6461 standard, addressing the unique considerations and challenges associated with implementing SHM in rotorcraft without duplicating the guidance already provided in the ARP, which is applicable to both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
The document defines SHM as the process of obtaining and analyzing data from on-board sensors to assess the condition of a structure. It does not differentiate between permanent or temporary sensor installations and includes both existing aircraft sensors and potential future sensors. The acquired sensor data can be examined either on-board during flight or off-board using ground support equipment during maintenance activities. The intended users of SHM are primarily maintenance and operations personnel. It's important to note that this standard does not cover topics such as SHM business case analysis, real-time display of health status, or providing recommendations to the flight crew.
